First Impressions

Some of my favorite types of projects are working with artists & other creatives. I know that I’m not great at oil painting or filmmaking, and I can’t play an instrument to save my life. So why should anyone expect the masters of these crafts also be masters of design? It’s a magical pairing when I can help passionate creatives who are excited to share their creations with the world. We’re told to not judge a book by its cover, but those in design know just how critical that first impression can be.

A Photo Book Filled With Words

How do you make a photo art book where the footnotes are the most important? This is what I was tasked with in 2019 by artist Meggan Gould. While collecting her thoughts, she found that the thoughts, or more so, the footnotes, were more important than the actual photos she was talking about. I developed a system where the side stories contained in the footnotes held an almost equal hierarchy to the main text. The photos played as a tertiary element, sprinkled in as thumbnails at the top of the pages, only later to be enlarged towards the back of the book.
